Why is the county assessor is an elected position? The assessor is elected to ensure the assessor’s direct accountability to the taxpayers, not to the boards of the government entities that levy and spend property taxes.

During the last campaign I ran on a platform of “Lower costs, Better values, No excuses.” I believe we have done all that in the last three years. We reversed a trend of escalating costs, we improved our valuation models and systems and we launched a website full of good and useful property information.

The assessor’s job requires a skillful application of valuation principles and methods, the management of complex systems, and a full understanding of property tax laws. All that goes into the creation of a fair and honest tax roll every year, which is the assessor’s only reason for being. I believe we have done that well in recent years.
